![Wench Film Festival in partnership with Alliance Française de Bombay presents FREAKS - a 1932 masterpiece for the next Cinéma de l’Étrange!
FREAKS (1932)
Before it became a cult classic, Freaks shocked audiences so deeply that it was banned in several countries and effectively disappeared from circulation for decades. Following its release, the film was withdrawn and heavily censored, and it remained banned in the UK for over 30 years. In the United States, many theatres refused to screen it, and it was effectively suppressed after a public backlash.
Directed by Tod Browning (Dracula), Freaks tells the story of a travelling circus and features performers with real physical differences rather than actors in makeup. Nearly a century later, it remains one of the most controversial, compassionate, and radical films ever made.
Join us for this rare big-screen screening of a film that challenged ideas of beauty, normality, and belonging long before Hollywood was ready.
The film will be followed by a discussion with Harish and Sumair - individuals who have spent their lives challenging society’s ideas of what is “normal" and moderated by Sapna

Announced at Cannes - Wench Film Festival is now the FIRST film festival to officially tie up with Bloodstream.
This means Wench now has its own dedicated channel on the app, creating a new pipeline of distribution and visibility for our filmmakers beyond the festival circuit.

![🎬 India Premiere | Cinéma de l’Étrange
Sugar Rot
An exclusive India premiere at Wench and a fiercely DIY, award-winning indie that doesn’t hold back.
After a brutal assault by an ice cream man, punk girl Candy becomes host to a mutant baby. As her body begins to transform into ice cream, the world around her stops seeing her as human, only as something to consume.
Fuelled by a blistering punk soundtrack and drenched in grotesque body horror, Sugar Rot is wild, confrontational, and unapologetically feminist.

![BLOODTHIRSTY Winner: Mother of Flies - The Adams Family 🏆
Deliciously deranged.
Beautifully unholy.
Some films sip blood.
This one bathed in it.
Jury Citation-
Selected as the top film of the 2026 Wench Festival, Mother of Flies feels deeply aligned with what Wench stands for: bold, woman-led horror that isn’t afraid to get intimate, messy, and emotionally honest. In its meditation on death, care, and transformation, the film embraces horror as a space for grief, truth, strangeness, and storytelling that refuses to play it safe.

With 34 incredible short films to choose from, electing one winner was no easy task. After carefully reviewing and discussing them all, the jury has decided to award the one title that stood out for its stark black and white cinematography, its incredible use of sound, and a uniquely restrained portrayal of a witch trial - the winner is Barlebas by Malu Janssen.
We would also like to give a special mention to two films that managed to surprise and have stuck with us. The first one is Moti by Yash Saraf for its unexpected tenderness in such a surreal setting, and the second is Foreigners Only by Nuhash Humayun for its humorous and satirical tone in portraying the worldwide relatable housing crisis.

We, the jury, are proud to give the Elves Award to Ummid Ashraf’s impressive DHET!.
Taking the audience straight into the nights of Dhaka, this wonderful film turns an urban landscape into a frightful maze. Directed with expertise, the short quickly becomes a suspenseful adrenaline rush - with one truly effective jump scare!
We are also happy to give a Special Mention to Aditya Nair’s WHODUNIT and Alexandra Hayden’s WALL UDDER.
While very different, those two films are not afraid to storm normality with weirdness, humor and passion.
