in the news 2025

We are excited to announce that Shakchunni, the enigmatic spirit from Bengali folklore, will be the official mascot of this year's Wench Film Festival. Traditionally depicted as the ghost of a married woman adorned with 'Shakha Pola' bangles, Shakchunni embodies narratives of women who, in death, seek the autonomy and respect they were denied in life. Just like the word Wench, by embracing Shakchunni, we honour stories that challenge patriarchal norms and celebrate the resilience and agency of women, both in folklore and contemporary society. Join us as we delve into tales of the supernatural, honouring narratives that challenge and captivate.

![We are stoked to present
Blood & Budgets - a producer focused workshop by Atit Shah.
Atit will walk through how The Red Mask (Our Opening Film) was developed and funded, the challenges of pitching a genre film, the decisions taken at each stage, and what it actually takes to move a project forward when there is no established template or guaranteed backing.
The masterclass offers an honest, practical look at funding a genre film in today’s landscape what worked, what didn’t, and what producers can realistically expect when bringing bold genre work to life.

![Thank you for all the messages, we’re genuinely overwhelmed.
To see so many of you reaching out because you care about horror, sci-fi and fantasy as cinema that questions, unsettles and imagines differently means a great deal to us.
We’re especially grateful to the SRFTI faculty for recognising the space Wench holds for these genres and for encouraging students to step into it.
Wench was built as a place to take these films seriously, to argue with them, feel them deeply, and experience them together.
We’d truly love to welcome you.
