in the news 2025

We are excited to announce that Shakchunni, the enigmatic spirit from Bengali folklore, will be the official mascot of this year's Wench Film Festival. Traditionally depicted as the ghost of a married woman adorned with 'Shakha Pola' bangles, Shakchunni embodies narratives of women who, in death, seek the autonomy and respect they were denied in life. Just like the word Wench, by embracing Shakchunni, we honour stories that challenge patriarchal norms and celebrate the resilience and agency of women, both in folklore and contemporary society. Join us as we delve into tales of the supernatural, honouring narratives that challenge and captivate.

19:32 mins
Director - Syed Shadan
Presented by Anurag Kashyap and Ranjan SIngh
After landing a suspiciously perfect apartment through his broker, a man begins to sense something is wrong with the house. He soon realises that the walls are closing in. ![**RESCHEDULED TO JULY 16**
Wench Film Festival in partnership with Alliance Française de Bombay presents FREAKS - a 1932 masterpiece for the next Cinéma de l’Étrange!
FREAKS (1932)
Before it became a cult classic, Freaks shocked audiences so deeply that it was banned in several countries and effectively disappeared from circulation for decades. Following its release, the film was withdrawn and heavily censored, and it remained banned in the UK for over 30 years. In the United States, many theatres refused to screen it, and it was effectively suppressed after a public backlash.
Directed by Tod Browning (Dracula), Freaks tells the story of a travelling circus and features performers with real physical differences rather than actors in makeup. Nearly a century later, it remains one of the most controversial, compassionate, and radical films ever made.
Join us for this rare big-screen screening of a film that challenged ideas of beauty, normality, and belonging long before Hollywood was ready.
The film will be followed by a discussion with Harish and Sumair - individuals who have spent their lives challenging society’s ideas of what is “normal" and moderated by Sapna
